Analysis of the Basic Process and Advantages of Open Die Forging

What is open die forging?

Open die forging is a method of processing forgings by using simple and versatile tools or directly applying external force to the billet between the upper and lower anvils of the forging equipment in order to achieve the desired geometric shape and internal quality. The forgings produced by using the open die forging method are called open die forgings.

Open die forging is mainly used to produce forgings with small production batches. Forge hammers, hydraulic presses and other forging equipment are used to shape the billets and obtain qualified forgings.

What are the processes of open die forging?

The basic processes of open die forging include upsetting, elongation, punching, cutting, bending, twisting, offsetting and forging. The heating forging method is adopted for open die forging.

The open die forging process includes basic processes, auxiliary processes and finishing processes.

The basic processes of open die forging

Upsetting, elongation, punching, bending, cutting, twisting, offsetting and forging. However, in actual production, the most commonly used processes are upsetting, elongation and punching.

Auxiliary processes

Pre-deformation processes such as clamping, pressing steel ingots, cutting shoulders, etc.

Finishing processes

Reduce the surface defects of forgings such as removing unevenness and shaping the surfaces of the forgings.

What are the advantages of open die forging?

  • Greater flexibility in forging, enabling the production of small forgings weighing less than 100kg, as well as heavy-duty forgings upwards of 300t.

  • Simplified and versatile tools are used for the forging process.

  • The forging process gradually deforms the billet into different zones. Therefore, the required forging equipment capacity is much smaller than that required for model forging.

  • The precision requirements for equipment are low, and the production cycle is short.

What are the disadvantages and limitations of open die forging?

The production efficiency of open die forging is much lower than that of model forging; the shape of the forging is simple, the dimensional accuracy is low, and the surface is rough. The labor intensity of workers is high, and the technical level required is also high. It is difficult to achieve mechanization and automation.
